Your Questions on AI Answered
At Study Slam, we want students, educators and organisations to understand how our AI features work, how information is protected, and how AI can be used responsibly to support learning.
Study Slam uses Artificial Intelligence to enhance learning, accessibility and study organisation. AI is designed to support students’ thinking and understanding, not replace their judgement, creativity or academic responsibility.
This page explains how AI is used within Study Slam, how we protect information, and the safeguards we apply when developing AI-enabled educational technology.
What is AI and how does it work?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is technology that can identify patterns, process information and generate suggestions, content or assistance based on the information provided.
In Study Slam, AI acts as a learning assistant that can help students:
- understand and organise information;
- summarise complex topics;
- generate study questions;
- create revision materials;
- explore ideas and concepts;
- access learning content in different formats.
AI does not think, learn or make decisions in the same way as a person. It generates outputs based on patterns and information available to it, which means users should always apply their own judgement.
Our Responsible AI Principles
OpenGenius develops and manages AI-enabled functionality in accordance with responsible AI principles aligned with recognised standards, including ISO/IEC 42001:2023.
Our approach is based on:
Fairness
We consider the potential impact of AI features on different groups of users and seek to design inclusive learning experiences.
Transparency
We clearly identify, label and explain where AI is being used and explain how AI functionality works.
Safety
We design AI features with appropriate safeguards and encourage responsible use.
Security
We apply appropriate technical and organisational controls to protect information.
Privacy
We process personal information responsibly and in accordance with applicable data protection requirements.
Data Quality
We consider the accuracy, reliability and limitations of AI-generated outputs.
Human Oversight and Control
Students and educators remain responsible for decisions, learning outcomes and the use of AI-generated content.
Accountability
We maintain governance processes covering AI risk assessment, supplier assurance and continual improvement.

Study Slam uses approved third-party technology providers to support certain AI functionality.
Current AI-enabled services may include:
OpenAI
Some Study Slam generative AI functionality is powered by OpenAI technology.
Where AI functionality is used, relevant inputs may be processed by OpenAI to provide the requested service.
OpenGenius has contractual arrangements and technical controls designed to protect customer information.
OpenGenius does not permit customer data submitted through approved Study Slam AI integrations to be used to train third-party AI models.
Amazon Web Services (Polly)
Study Slam may use Amazon Polly technology to support audio generation functionality.
Where audio generation is requested, relevant information may be processed by Amazon Polly to provide the requested service.
Processing arrangements are governed by applicable supplier agreements and security controls.
Our supplier assurance process considers:
- security practices;
- privacy commitments;
- contractual protections;
- data processing arrangements;
- technical safeguards;
- responsible AI considerations.
AI providers are assessed as part of our wider information security and AI governance framework, informed by:
- UK GDPR requirements;
- ICO guidance on AI and data protection;
- NCSC guidance;
- ISO/IEC 27001:2022;
- ISO/IEC 42001:2023.
Where third-party AI services are used, information is shared only where necessary to provide the requested AI functionality. OpenGenius has opted out of all data sharing for AI model training.
Is student information used to train AI models?
- Student information is not used to train publicly available AI models;
- AI providers are contractually required to apply appropriate data protection safeguards;

What are the risks of using AI?
AI provides valuable support but also has limitations.
AI accuracy
AI-generated content may sometimes contain:
- incorrect information;
- incomplete explanations;
- unexpected responses.
Students should review AI outputs and use their own judgement before relying on information provided by AI.
Academic integrity
AI should be used as a learning aid and not as a replacement for independent thinking.
Students must follow their education provider’s rules regarding:
- AI-assisted work;
- assessments;
- citations;
- academic submissions.
Data protection
Students should avoid entering unnecessary personal, confidential or sensitive information into AI features.
Only information needed to provide the requested AI functionality should be shared.
How do we manage these risks?
OpenGenius manages AI-related risks through:
Governance
Including:
- AI risk assessments;
- supplier reviews;
- privacy assessments;
- security reviews;
- ongoing monitoring;
- staff training.
Human oversight
AI outputs are designed to support users, not replace human judgement.
Students remain responsible for how they use AI-generated information.
Security controls
AI functionality operates within OpenGenius’ wider security framework and is subject to ongoing monitoring and measurement, including annual, external, impartial compliance auditing.
Continual improvement
We regularly review AI developments, emerging regulation and user feedback to improve Study Slam.
Does AI create plagiarism risks?
Study Slam is designed to support learning, not to complete academic work on behalf of students.
AI can help students:
- understand topics;
- generate ideas;
- revise effectively;
- organise learning materials.
Students remain responsible for ensuring their work reflects their own understanding and complies with their education provider’s academic integrity requirements.
Students should:
- review AI-generated information;
- avoid copying AI outputs without understanding them;
- acknowledge and reflect where AI assistance has been used
- follow institutional guidance, including guidelines on plagiarism and copyright.
AI should be used as a study partner, not as a substitute for learning.
Who owns AI-generated content?
Ownership depends on the content involved.
Generally:
- students retain ownership of their own uploaded notes and learning materials;
- OpenGenius retains ownership of the Study Slam platform and underlying technology;
- users remain responsible for ensuring generated content complies with copyright, academic and institutional requirements.
AI-generated outputs should always be reviewed before being used or shared.
Can organisations control AI availability?
Where Study Slam is supplied through an education provider or reseller, available features may be managed according to the applicable deployment arrangement.
Organisations may apply their own policies regarding acceptable AI use.
Is AI supervised by people?
Yes.
AI systems are designed to support users while keeping people in control.
OpenGenius applies governance measures including:
